Is Zimbabwe Safe to Travel to in 2026?

Risk level: Elevated risk

Last updated

Overview

Country with spectacular natural attractions (Victoria Falls, Hwange, Mana Pools) but crippled by decades of political mismanagement, economic collapse, and instability after the fall of Rhodesia.

Best time to visit

Dry season roughly May to October is best for wildlife and cooler weather.

Safety

High risk. Violent crime, robbery, and carjackings occur. Political repression and sudden policy changes are possible. Some areas have landmine risks from the civil war era. Kidnapping is rare but not unheard of.

Recommendations

Only travel with reputable operators. Stick strictly to established tourist routes. Have cash (preferably USD). Avoid political discussions. Security can be unpredictable.

Health and tap water

Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.

Very limited healthcare. Malaria is widespread. Medical facilities are poor outside Harare and Bulawayo.

Entry and exit

Visa on arrival available but the country is generally not tourist-friendly.

Laws

Laws can be arbitrarily enforced. Criticism of the government can lead to problems.

Other notes

Victoria Falls remains a major draw. The country has incredible wildlife and landscapes, but decades of economic mismanagement have left it in poor shape. People are generally friendly.
