Disputed territory between Morocco and the Polisario Front. Highly militarized and unstable. Not recommended for travel.
Best time to visit
Winter and early spring are more moderate; summers are extremely hot.
Safety
Military presence, landmines, and risk of clashes between Moroccan forces and Polisario. Movement is restricted and monitored. Kidnapping and banditry are real risks in remote areas.
Recommendations
Strongly advised to avoid. If travel is unavoidable, only go with experienced local guides and up-to-date security information.
Health and tap water
Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.
Very limited medical facilities. Poor sanitation and infrastructure.
Entry and exit
Controlled by Morocco in the north and west. Very difficult and risky to enter independently.
Laws
Moroccan law in controlled areas. Polisario / SADR law in the east. Enforcement is inconsistent and often militarized.
