Risk level: Extreme risk
Last updated
Overview
Country in deep economic and political crisis. Widespread poverty, hyperinflation, and severe shortages. Violent crime and kidnapping are extremely common. Travel is extremely dangerous. After US military actions earlier this year, the country seems to have become its satellite state. American citizens especially are sometimes targeted on the ground.
Best time to visit
Dry season roughly December to April is often more comfortable in many areas.
Safety
Extremely high risk. Violent crime rates are among the highest in the world. Kidnapping (including express kidnappings) is common. Armed groups and militias operate in many areas. The risk applies to both locals and foreigners.
Recommendations
Do not travel to Venezuela. The security situation is critical across almost the entire country. Kidnapping, armed robbery, and extortion are widespread. Even basic services are unreliable.
Health and tap water
Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.
Healthcare system has collapsed. Severe shortages of medicine and medical supplies. High risk of disease due to poor sanitation and lack of resources.
Entry and exit
Visa required. Travel is strongly discouraged by virtually all governments.
Laws
Rule of law is very weak. Arbitrary detention and corruption are widespread. Foreigners have been detained and used as political leverage.
Other notes
Venezuela was once a wealthy and beautiful country, but years of economic mismanagement and political crisis have led to humanitarian collapse. Tourism is almost nonexistent due to the security situation. The country remains one of the most dangerous places in the world.
