Risk level: Low risk

Last updated

Overview

The world's smallest independent state and headquarters of the Catholic Church. Extremely safe, orderly, and well-protected.

Best time to visit

April to June and September to October; summers are hot and peak tourist season in Rome.

Safety

One of the safest places on Earth. Violent crime is virtually nonexistent. The Swiss Guard and Italian police provide strong security. Petty theft can occasionally occur in crowded areas like St. Peter's Square.

Recommendations

Extremely safe. Normal precautions are more than enough. Be respectful inside religious sites (dress modestly and follow photography rules). Can get very crowded during peak season.

Health and tap water

Tap water: Excellent — generally safe to drink from the tap.

Excellent healthcare access. Tap water is safe to drink.

Entry and exit

Visa-free (as it is part of the Schengen Area via Italy).

Laws

Strict rules inside Vatican territory (especially dress code and behavior in religious sites).

Other notes

Home to St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums, and the Sistine Chapel. Can feel very crowded with tourists. Small enough to explore in a day. Extremely well-maintained and orderly.

Emergency numbers: Police 112, Ambulance 112, Fire 112.
