Overview
Safe, stable, and increasingly tourist-friendly Central Asian country with some of the finest Silk Road architecture in the world. Uzbekistan offers incredible historical cities such as Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva, along with a rich cultural heritage. The country has improved significantly in recent years in terms of tourism infrastructure, visa ease, and overall visitor experience. Major cities are well organized for tourists, and the people are generally very hospitable. While some areas remain more conservative and less developed, the main tourist routes are straightforward and low-risk. Uzbekistan is one of the best and most accessible countries in Central Asia for cultural tourism.
Best time to visit
April to June and September to October; summers are very hot in the lowlands.
Safety
Very low violent crime against tourists. Petty theft exists but is infrequent. The country is stable with strong police presence in tourist areas. Much safer than many people expect from Central Asia. Road safety is reasonable on main routes between major cities.
Recommendations
Use reputable local guides for historical sites, especially in Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva. Dress modestly at religious sites and in more conservative areas. Use official taxis or Yandex Go in cities. Respect local customs and Islamic traditions. Public transport between major cities is decent, and domestic flights are available for longer distances.
Health and tap water
Tap water: OK in major urban areas; caution elsewhere.
Decent healthcare in Tashkent and other major cities. Tap water should be treated or use bottled water as a precaution. Stomach issues are possible from food and water. Pharmacies are available in urban areas. Medical standards are acceptable in tourist zones.
Entry and exit
Visa-free or e-visa for many nationalities. The process is relatively straightforward and has become much easier in recent years.
Laws
Strict on drugs. Conservative society with strong Islamic traditions. Criticism of the government is not wise. Laws are generally applied consistently in tourist areas.

Uzbekistan offers world-class Islamic architecture, especially in Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva. The people are very hospitable and proud of their history. The country is still developing its tourism infrastructure but has improved rapidly. Food is hearty and flavorful with strong Central Asian influences. Summers are very hot, while winters can be cold. Public transport is decent between major cities.
