Is United Kingdom Safe to Travel to in 2026?

Risk level: Moderate risk

Last updated

Overview

Developed island nation with rich history, culture, countryside, and world-class attractions. Rural areas, Scotland, and Wales are generally calm and safe. Parts of England, especially major cities, show visible urban disorder, weak enforcement of petty crime, and a higher frequency of extreme violence cases than most comparable European countries.

Best time to visit

May to September for the mildest weather; rain is possible year-round.

Safety

Petty theft and pickpocketing are common in crowded tourist spots, especially in London. Knife crime and serious violence are concentrated in parts of London, Birmingham, Manchester, and some other English cities, though random attacks on tourists remain rare. The UK has a higher rate of high-profile extreme violence cases (including against children) than European peers such as Germany, France, Switzerland, Poland, or Spain. Rural areas and Scotland remain very safe.

Recommendations

Stick to well-known tourist areas in London and other cities during the day. Use normal big-city precautions at night and avoid getting involved in any street disputes or protests. Scotland, Wales, and rural England are noticeably calmer and safer.

Health and tap water

Tap water: Excellent — generally safe to drink from the tap.

Good healthcare access via the NHS for visitors. Tap water is safe and high quality.

Entry and exit

Visa-free for most nationalities up to 6 months. Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) required for many visitors.

Laws

Have severely declined over the last decade. Strict laws on knives and drugs. Hate speech and communications laws are broader than in most of Western Europe and have led to arrests for online and public statements - do not say anything that can be considered 'inflamatory' (an intentionally extremely broad standard). Enforcement of minor crime (theft, shoplifting) is weak in many urban areas. There is documented evidence of police routinely inconsistently applying rules, or sometimes outright favoritism, based on intrinsic characteristics, such as race (ex. Henry Nowak). This is not the police being corrupt, corruption is low and you should not attempt to bribe cops here, but rather outright state policy (ex. from the NPCC's anti racism commitment - 'Producing equality of policing outcomes /.../ does not mean treating everyone ‘the same’ or being ‘colour blind’ (racial equality)'). For most intents and purposes, the UK police should be avoided - if it's something minor (like a stolen phone or wallet) then just take the loss.

Other notes

World-class museums, pubs, countryside, and history. London and some other English cities can feel tired and strained with visible litter and disorder. Generally expensive in major tourist centres.

Emergency numbers: Police 999, Ambulance 999, Fire 999.
