Is Ukraine Safe to Travel to in 2026?
Risk level: High risk
Last updated
Overview
Country at war with Russia. Significant parts are active conflict zones. Travel is highly risky and unpredictable.
Best time to visit
May to September for the mildest weather where travel is possible.
Safety
Ongoing Russian missile/drone strikes, artillery, and ground fighting in eastern and southern regions. High risk of death or injury. Blackouts, curfews, and movement restrictions are common. Crime has risen in some areas due to war.
Recommendations
Strongly advised to avoid. If you have essential reasons to go, only visit western regions far from the front lines. Those regions are still affected by missile strikes and air raids. Follow local authorities' instructions and stay updated on the security situation. Do not go to eastern or southern regions.
Health and tap water
Tap water: Excellent — generally safe to drink from the tap.
Strained healthcare system. Shortages of medicine in some regions. Poor sanitation and risk of infectious diseases in conflict areas.
Entry and exit
Possible but complicated. Land borders with EU countries are functional. Air travel is limited and risky.
Laws
Martial law is in effect. Movement restrictions, conscription rules, and military checkpoints. Foreigners can be subject to additional scrutiny.
Other notes
Western Ukraine (Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, etc.) is relatively safer but still affected by air strikes and refugee issues. Eastern and southern regions are war zones.
Emergency numbers: Police 102, Ambulance 103, Fire 101.
