Best time to visit

Drier periods roughly December to February and June to July are often preferred; rains can occur in other months.

Safety

Moderate risk. Petty crime and scams in cities. Some border regions have risks from armed groups. Road safety is poor. Terrorism incidents have occurred in the past.

Recommendations

Use reputable operators for gorilla trekking. Be cautious in Kampala. Avoid border areas with South Sudan and DRC. Stick to established tourist routes.

Health and tap water

Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.

Basic healthcare. High malaria risk. Tap water is not safe to drink.

Entry and exit

Visa on arrival or e-visa available.

Laws

Generally relaxed toward tourists. Very strict anti-LGBTQ laws exist.

Other notes

Outstanding wildlife experiences. Can feel chaotic and underdeveloped outside tourist zones. Good value but requires more caution than East African peers like Kenya or Tanzania.
