Overview
Extremely closed and authoritarian Central Asian country. Tourism is heavily restricted and controlled. The country is very difficult to visit independently and has very limited transparency.
Best time to visit
March to May and September to November; summers are extremely hot in the desert.
Safety
Low street crime due to heavy state control. The main risks are legal and political. Foreigners can be detained or expelled for minor or perceived infractions. The country has almost no independent media or civil society.
Recommendations
Travel is only possible through approved tour operators. Never criticize the government or the late president. Avoid taking photos of government buildings or sensitive sites. Expect heavy surveillance at all times.
Health and tap water
Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.
Basic healthcare. Tap water is not safe to drink. Limited medical infrastructure outside Ashgabat.
Entry and exit
Visa required and difficult to obtain. Must travel with a licensed guide/tour operator. Independent travel is not permitted.
Laws
Extremely strict. Criticism of the government or president can lead to detention. Photography restrictions are heavily enforced. Foreigners are closely monitored.

Known for its bizarre personality cult around the former president and extremely strict control over daily life. The country feels like a mix of North Korea and a luxury dictatorship. Tourism is minimal and heavily stage-managed. Very difficult country to visit freely.
