Risk level: Moderate risk

Last updated

Overview

Popular Caribbean destination with beautiful beaches and clear water. Safety varies significantly - tourist areas on the Out Islands are generally fine, but New Providence (Nassau) has real crime problems.

Best time to visit

December to April is drier peak season; June to November is hurricane season.

Safety

Moderate to high risk depending on the island. Nassau has serious issues with violent crime, robberies, and gang activity. Tourist areas on Paradise Island are better but still require awareness. The Out Islands are much safer.

Recommendations

Be very cautious in Nassau, especially outside tourist zones. Stick to well-known resorts and areas. Use reputable transportation. The Out Islands (Exumas, Eleuthera, etc.) are significantly safer and more relaxed.

Health and tap water

Tap water: OK in major urban areas; caution elsewhere.

Basic to good private healthcare in tourist areas. Tap water is generally safe on major islands. Some mosquito-borne disease risk.

Entry and exit

Visa-free for most nationalities up to 90 days.

Laws

Generally relaxed toward tourists. Strict on drugs.

Other notes

World-class beaches and water. Tourism is heavily developed in Nassau and Paradise Island. Can feel very touristy and commercial. The Out Islands offer a more authentic and peaceful experience. Infrastructure and services vary widely between islands.
