Risk level: Moderate risk
Last updated
Overview
One of the world's most popular tourist destinations, known for its beautiful beaches, rich culture, delicious food, and generally friendly people. Very well developed for tourism.
Best time to visit
November to February is the classic cool dry season for much of the country; March to May is very hot; wet season is roughly June to October (timing differs in the south).
Safety
Low violent crime against tourists in most areas. Petty theft, scams, and overcharging are common. Road accidents are a major risk. Some southern provinces have occasional security issues.
Recommendations
Be extremely careful with scams (tuk-tuk drivers, gem shops, fake travel agents). Use reputable operators. Road safety is poor — avoid driving yourself if possible. 18+ tourism is widespread in certain areas (especially Pattaya and parts of Bangkok and Phuket). Avoid the Thai-Cambodian border regions due to occasional tensions and shoot-outs.
Health and tap water
Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.
Good private healthcare in tourist areas. Malaria risk exists in some rural/border regions. Tap water is not safe to drink. Food hygiene can be an issue.
Entry and exit
Visa-free for most up to 60 days (extendable). Very easy entry process.
Laws
Strict on drugs (including cannabis in some cases). Insulting the monarchy is a serious offense.
Other notes
Incredible food, beaches, temples, and islands. Very easy to travel around with good infrastructure for tourists. Can feel very commercialized and touristy in popular areas. 18+ tourism is a major industry in certain locations and is openly visible.
