Is Syria Safe to Travel to in 2026?

Risk level: Extreme risk

Last updated

Overview

Still extremely unstable after the fall of Assad. Multiple factions, foreign powers, and warlords control different areas. Not safe for travel.

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn are more moderate where travel is even considered; summers are hot.

Safety

Ongoing factional fighting, Turkish/Kurdish/rebel/Iranian/Russian influence, ISIS remnants, and general lawlessness in many areas. Kidnapping, arbitrary detention, looting, and violence are common. Large parts of the country are destroyed or under militia control.

Recommendations

Do not travel. The situation remains highly fluid and dangerous.

Health and tap water

Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.

Completely collapsed healthcare system in most areas. Severe shortages of medicine, clean water, and basic services. High risk of disease.

Entry and exit

Extremely chaotic. Borders and airports are controlled by different groups. No reliable civilian entry.

Laws

No functioning central authority. Rule by whoever has the guns in each area. This is often arbitrary and brutal.

Other notes

Syria remains a broken country. Some areas have seen minor stabilization but the overall situation is still one of the worst in the world. Is on the American sanctions list, travel may cause issues entering the USA.

Emergency numbers: Police 112, Ambulance 110, Fire 113.
