Risk level: Low risk
Last updated
Overview
One of the safest, cleanest, and most efficient countries in the world. Stunning Alpine scenery, world-class infrastructure, high quality of life, and extremely low crime make it a top-tier destination. Switzerland consistently ranks among the best countries globally for safety, cleanliness, and public services.
Best time to visit
June to September for hiking and cities; December to March for skiing.
Safety
Extremely low violent crime. Petty theft and pickpocketing exist in major cities and tourist hotspots (especially on trains and in crowded areas like Zurich main station or Geneva), but rates are low compared to most European countries. Rural areas, villages, and the Alps feel exceptionally safe. Police are professional and responsive. Public spaces are clean and well-maintained.
Recommendations
Switzerland is very safe, but normal big-city awareness is still advised in Zurich, Geneva, and Basel (petty theft and pickpocketing can occur in tourist areas and on public transport). Use hotel safes for valuables. The Alps and smaller towns are exceptionally calm and trustworthy. Trains and public transport are excellent and safe.
Health and tap water
Tap water: Excellent — generally safe to drink from the tap.
World-class healthcare system with excellent hospitals and emergency services. Tap water is among the best in the world and safe to drink everywhere. Pharmacies are widespread and well-stocked. Altitude sickness can occur in high mountain areas.
Entry and exit
Visa-free for most nationalities up to 90 days within the Schengen Area. ETIAS expected later in 2026. Very efficient border control.
Laws
Strict on drugs, public behavior, and cleanliness. Very low corruption. Society is highly rule-oriented and orderly. Fines for littering or minor infractions are common and enforced.
Other notes
Incredible natural beauty with the Alps, lakes, and pristine countryside. Extremely efficient and punctual public transport, clean cities, and high-quality everything. Expensive, but the quality and safety justify it for most travelers. Feels peaceful, precise, and prosperous. Food is excellent (especially dairy, chocolate, and regional specialties). Multilingual (German, French, Italian, Romansh) with English widely spoken in tourist areas.
Emergency numbers: Police 117, Ambulance 144, Fire 118.
