Is Sri Lanka Safe to Travel to in 2026?

Risk level: Moderate risk

Last updated

Overview

Beautiful island with rich history and nature, but it went through a severe economic and political crisis in 2022 that caused mass protests and forced the president to resign. The situation has improved but remains fragile.

Best time to visit

Varies by coast: roughly December to March is popular on the west and south; the east coast often favors roughly April to September.

Safety

Moderate risk. Petty theft, scams, and sexual harassment occur in tourist zones. The country experienced major unrest in 2022. While large-scale violence has decreased, underlying economic and political tensions remain. Road accidents are a significant risk.

Recommendations

Be cautious of scams and overcharging in tourist areas. Use reputable drivers and guides. Avoid political discussions. Road safety is poor. Check current conditions, as protests or instability can still flare up.

Health and tap water

Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.

Basic to good private healthcare in major cities. Tap water is not safe to drink. Some risk of mosquito-borne diseases.

Entry and exit

Visa required (ETA or visa on arrival for most nationalities).

Laws

Generally relaxed toward tourists. Strict on drugs. Political criticism can sometimes lead to issues during periods of tension.

Other notes

Incredible food, ancient sites, beaches, and tea plantations. Tourism infrastructure is decent in popular areas. However, the country is still in economic turmoil. Shortages do occur. Can feel chaotic and underdeveloped outside tourist zones. Friendly people.

Emergency numbers: Police 119, Ambulance 110, Fire 110.
