Risk level: Low-Moderate risk
Last updated
Overview
Beautiful and highly developed Mediterranean country that offers an outstanding combination of culture, food, history, and climate. Spain is one of Europe's most popular tourist destinations for good reason, with world-class cities, excellent regional cuisines, beautiful beaches, and a relaxed but vibrant lifestyle. The country is well organized for tourism and generally very safe, though major cities have become known for pickpocketing and some visible urban disorder in recent years. Spain has strong regional identities, with significant cultural and linguistic differences in areas like Catalonia, the Basque Country, Andalusia, Galicia and the rest of Spain. While tourist hotspots can feel crowded and commercialized, many parts of the country (like Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia) remain authentic and less visited. Overall, Spain delivers high quality experiences across a wide range of interests and budgets.
Best time to visit
April to June and September to October for most regions; Mediterranean summers are hot and crowded; Canary Islands are mild year-round.
Safety
Spain is generally very safe for tourists. Violent crime against visitors is rare. Petty theft and pickpocketing are the main issues, particularly in Barcelona, Madrid, and other major tourist cities. These crimes are usually opportunistic rather than violent. Some (usually migrant heavy) neighborhoods in large cities have developed into higher crime areas in recent years - avoid them. Smaller towns and the countryside are typically very calm and low-risk. Political protests occur occasionally, especially in Catalonia and the Basque Country, but they rarely affect tourists. Road safety is good on major routes. Overall, Spain is a low-risk destination when normal precautions are taken.
Recommendations
Focus on a mix of major cities (Madrid, Barcelona, Seville) and smaller historic towns or regions depending on your interests. Watch your belongings carefully in crowded tourist areas, especially in Barcelona and Madrid. Use official taxis or ride-hailing apps rather than street taxis in big cities. Avoid walking alone in certain neighborhoods at night if you're unfamiliar with the area. Public transport is excellent between major cities. Smaller towns and rural areas are generally very safe and relaxed. English is widely spoken in tourist zones but less so in smaller towns.
Health and tap water
Tap water: Excellent — generally safe to drink from the tap.
Excellent healthcare system with high standards. Tap water is safe to drink in almost all areas. Pharmacies are widespread and well-stocked. Emergency services are professional and responsive. Private health insurance can provide faster access to specialists if needed, though it is not usually necessary, especially not for short trips.
Entry and exit
Visa-free for most nationalities for up to 90 days in the Schengen Area. ETIAS authorization will be required for many travelers later in 2026. Spain has excellent international connections through major airports in Madrid and Barcelona.
Laws
Strict laws on drugs, though enforcement is generally lenient toward small personal amounts. Low levels of corruption. Laws are applied consistently in most cases. Public behavior is relatively relaxed, though noise and late-night activity are common in some areas, as the Spaniards sleep through the mid-day heat (siesta) and then hang out through the night.
Other notes
Spain offers exceptional food, with strong regional variations and high-quality ingredients. The country has a lively social culture centered around food, drink, and late evenings. Climate varies significantly, from the mild north to the hot, dry south. Tourist infrastructure is excellent in popular areas, though prices can be high in major cities and coastal resorts during peak season. Spain has a strong sense of regional identity, and many areas feel culturally distinct (Andalusia feels like a better northern Africa). Smaller towns and rural regions often provide a more authentic and relaxed experience than the big cities. The country is easy to travel around with good trains, buses, and budget flights. Summers can be very hot in the south, while winters are mild in most areas.
