Is South Korea Safe to Travel to in 2026?

Risk level: Low risk

Last updated

Overview

Highly developed, modern, and extremely safe country with excellent infrastructure, world-class public transport, and high standards of cleanliness and efficiency. South Korea offers a strong mix of vibrant cities, beautiful nature, and rich cultural experiences. Seoul and Busan are the main hubs for most visitors, with easy access to hiking, temples, beaches, and historical sites. The country has low crime rates, professional emergency services, and a very orderly society. It is one of the safest and most convenient destinations in Asia for travelers. English levels vary significantly - it is decent in major tourist areas of Seoul and Busan but much weaker elsewhere. Navigation apps like Google Maps have limited functionality due to national security policies, so Naver Map or Kakao Map are strongly recommended.

Best time to visit

April to June and September to November; summer is hot, humid, and rainy; winter is cold and good for skiing.

Safety

Very low violent crime. Petty theft exists but is rare. Excellent police and emergency services. Some protests occur in Seoul but are rarely violent. The country has a strong sense of public order and safety. Road safety is high. Overall, South Korea is one of the safest countries in the world for tourists. Fascinatingly, there are many cults in the country, which sometimes target tourists specifically. The way they try recruiting is that they will talk you up on the street and then attempt to move you elsewhere by saying they are part of a study group or something similar and if you want to join. Do not go with them.

Recommendations

Use public transport (subway and KTX high-speed trains are excellent) or Kakao Taxis in cities. Normal precautions are sufficient everywhere. Respect local etiquette, especially in temples and during meals. Carry a translation app as English is not widely spoken outside major tourist zones. Download Naver Map or Kakao Map before arrival. An e-Arrival card is required upon entry and is often missed on other travel sites.

Health and tap water

Tap water: Excellent — generally safe to drink from the tap.

World-class healthcare system. Very clean environment. Tap water is safe to drink nationwide. Pharmacies are widely available and well-stocked. Emergency services are fast and professional.

Entry and exit

Visa-free for most nationalities for short stays. The K-ETA or electronic visa system is straightforward. An e-Arrival card is a mandatory new requirement that is frequently omitted on other travel websites.

Laws

Strict on drugs. Laws are well-enforced with very low corruption. Public behavior is generally respectful and orderly. Laws are applied consistently and fairly.

Other notes

South Korea is extremely efficient, high-tech, and clean. Public transport is among the best in the world. Food is outstanding with strong regional variations and excellent street food. Hiking is very popular and well organized. The society is fast-paced but orderly. Winters can be cold, while summers are hot and humid. English is spoken in tourist areas of Seoul and Busan but drops off quickly elsewhere. The country offers a very convenient and safe travel experience with modern facilities and good organization.
