One of West Africa's more stable and tourist-friendly countries. Known for its vibrant culture, beautiful beaches, and relatively good infrastructure compared to the region.

Best time to visit

Dry season roughly November to May is generally preferred.

Safety

Moderate crime levels. Petty theft, scams, and occasional violent crime occur, especially in Dakar. Political stability is relatively good, though occasional protests can happen. Rural areas are generally calmer.

Recommendations

Normal precautions in Dakar (petty theft and scams are common). Stick to established tourist areas. Use reputable guides for trips outside the capital. Senegal is generally welcoming to tourists.

Health and tap water

Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.

Basic to good healthcare in Dakar. Malaria risk exists - take precautions. Tap water is not safe to drink. Stomach issues are common for travelers.

Entry and exit

Visa on arrival or e-visa available for many nationalities. Relatively straightforward entry process.

Laws

Generally tolerant. Homosexuality is illegal but rarely enforced against tourists. Drug laws are strict.

Vibrant music and cultural scene. Beautiful coastline and good beach resorts. Friendly people. Can feel chaotic in Dakar but is one of the more pleasant West African destinations for travelers.
