Is Qatar Safe to Travel to in 2026?

Risk level: Elevated risk

Last updated

Current alert: Recently targeted in attacks linked to regional tensions. The situation is calming but elevated caution is still advised in some areas.

Overview

Extremely wealthy and modern Gulf state with world-class infrastructure and high safety standards. One of the safest countries in the Middle East for tourists who follow local laws and customs.

Best time to visit

November to March; summers are extremely hot.

Safety

Very low street crime. Qatar is extremely safe in terms of violent crime and theft. The main risks are legal/cultural. Breaking local laws (especially around alcohol, dress, or behavior) can lead to fines, detention, or deportation.

Recommendations

Dress modestly in public (especially women). Avoid public displays of affection. Do not criticize the government or royal family. Alcohol is only available in licensed hotels and restaurants. Be respectful during Ramadan.

Health and tap water

Tap water: OK in major urban areas; caution elsewhere.

Excellent healthcare. Tap water is ok, but we still suggest bottled. Very high medical standards.

Entry and exit

Visa on arrival or e-visa available for most nationalities. Very efficient and modern entry process.

Laws

Strict on alcohol, drugs, dress code, and public behavior. Criticism of the Emir or Islam is illegal. LGBTQ individuals face legal risks.

Other notes

Ultra-modern cities (especially Doha), impressive museums, and luxury experiences. Very clean and well-organized. Can feel sterile and controlled compared to other Gulf countries. Excellent food scene with both local and international options. Extremely hot in summer.
