Is Puerto Rico Safe to Travel to in 2026?
Risk level: Moderate risk
Last updated
Overview
US territory in the Caribbean with beautiful beaches, historic San Juan, and a mix of American and Caribbean culture. Tourism is well developed, but crime and economic issues remain noticeable outside tourist zones.
Best time to visit
December to April is drier peak season; June to November is hurricane season.
Safety
Moderate risk. Petty crime and car break-ins are common in tourist areas. Some neighborhoods in San Juan and other cities have higher violent crime rates. Tourist zones are generally manageable but require normal big-city awareness. Road safety can be poor.
Recommendations
Stick to well-known tourist areas (Old San Juan, Condado, resort areas). Be cautious in San Juan outside tourist districts, especially at night. Avoid walking alone in certain neighborhoods. Hurricane season (June-November) can disrupt travel.
Health and tap water
Tap water: OK in major urban areas; caution elsewhere.
Good private healthcare in tourist areas. Tap water is generally safe but bottled water is recommended in some areas. Mosquito-borne illnesses are possible.
Entry and exit
US citizens can travel freely. Most other nationalities need a visa or ESTA (as it is a US territory).
Laws
Follows US law. Strict on drugs. Police presence varies by area.
Other notes
Strong food culture, historic sites, and beaches. Can feel very American in infrastructure but Caribbean in atmosphere. Tourism is concentrated in San Juan and resort areas. Outside these zones, conditions can feel rougher due to economic challenges. Good value compared to many Caribbean islands but with more visible urban issues than places like Aruba or Turks and Caicos.
