Is Portugal Safe to Travel to in 2026?

Risk level: Low-Moderate risk

Last updated

Overview

Generally safe and pleasant European country with beautiful cities, coastline, and good infrastructure. One of the more relaxed and tourist-friendly countries in Western Europe.

Best time to visit

April to June and September to October; Algarve summers are hot and busy; Madeira is mild year-round.

Safety

Low violent crime against tourists. Petty theft and pickpocketing are the main issues in major cities and tourist areas. Some scams targeting tourists exist but are usually non-violent.

Recommendations

Be cautious of pickpocketing in Lisbon, Porto, and other tourist hotspots. Use hotel safes and stay aware in crowded areas. The rest of the country is usually very calm.

Health and tap water

Tap water: Excellent — generally safe to drink from the tap.

Good healthcare. Tap water is safe to drink in most places.

Entry and exit

Visa-free for most up to 90 days in Schengen. ETIAS expected later in 2026.

Laws

Generally relaxed. Can be strict on drugs (though decriminalized). Well-organized country with low corruption.

Other notes

Excellent food, wine, and friendly people. Beautiful historic cities and coastline. Can feel very touristy in Lisbon and the Algarve during summer. Good value compared to many Western European countries.

Emergency numbers: Police 112, Ambulance 112, Fire 112.
