Is Philippines Safe to Travel to in 2026?

Risk level: Moderate risk

Last updated

Overview

Archipelagic country with beautiful beaches, diving, and friendly people. Tourism is well developed in many areas, but safety varies significantly between regions due to crime, occasional terrorism, and natural disaster risks.

Best time to visit

Dry season roughly December to May in much of the country; June to November is wetter with typhoon risk.

Safety

Moderate risk. Petty theft, scams, and sexual harassment are common in tourist areas. Some regions (particularly parts of Mindanao) have ongoing risks from terrorism and armed groups. Road safety is poor. Natural disasters (typhoons, earthquakes, volcanoes) are frequent.

Recommendations

Stick to well-established tourist areas. Use reputable tour operators and transportation. Avoid walking alone at night in cities. Be cautious of scams and petty theft. Check current advisories for parts of Mindanao.

Health and tap water

Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.

Basic to good private healthcare in major cities and tourist areas. Tap water is not safe to drink. High risk of stomach issues and mosquito-borne diseases.

Entry and exit

Visa-free for most nationalities up to 30 days (extendable).

Laws

Generally relaxed toward tourists. Strict on drugs. Corruption exists in some areas.

Other notes

Excellent diving, beaches, and island-hopping. Very friendly people. Can feel chaotic and underdeveloped outside tourist zones. Tourism infrastructure is good in popular areas (Boracay, Palawan, Cebu) but basic elsewhere. Typhoon season (June–November) can disrupt travel.

Emergency numbers: Police 911, Ambulance 911, Fire 911.
