Is Paraguay Safe to Travel to in 2026?

Risk level: Low-Moderate risk

Last updated

Overview

Landlocked South American country with a mix of indigenous and colonial culture. Generally calmer and less developed than its neighbors, with moderate tourism.

Best time to visit

May to September (milder dry season); summers are very hot and humid.

Safety

Low to moderate risk. Petty theft and scams occur in cities. Violent crime is lower than in many neighboring countries, but corruption and organized crime (especially near the Brazilian border) exist. Road safety can be poor.

Recommendations

Normal precautions in Asunción and other cities. Be cautious with driving and petty crime. The countryside and smaller towns are generally relaxed.

Health and tap water

Tap water: OK in major urban areas; caution elsewhere.

Basic healthcare. Tap water is generally not safe to drink. Some mosquito-borne disease risk.

Entry and exit

Visa-free for most nationalities up to 90 days.

Laws

Generally relaxed toward tourists. Strict on drugs. Corruption is widespread.

Other notes

Interesting culture with strong indigenous influence. Asunción has some charm but feels underdeveloped. The countryside is peaceful. Good value for money but tourism infrastructure is limited outside the capital and a few spots.
