Is Palestine Safe to Travel to in 2026?

Risk level: High risk

Last updated

Overview

Highly unstable and fragmented territory with major security risks across most areas. The West Bank is divided into different zones with varying levels of control and frequent tensions. Gaza remains an active conflict zone with severe humanitarian and security problems. Travel is not recommended for most people. The situation can change rapidly due to military operations, protests, or political developments. Conditions are very different between the West Bank and Gaza, and even within the West Bank itself.

Best time to visit

Spring and autumn are more moderate; summers are hot.

Safety

Frequent violence, military operations, checkpoints, protests, and sudden closures. Gaza is an active conflict zone with severe restrictions and an ongoing crisis. The West Bank has areas of high tension, settler-related incidents, and movement restrictions. Israeli-controlled zones have a heavy security presence but are generally safer than other parts. The overall risk level is high and unpredictable.

Recommendations

Strongly advised to avoid. If travel is absolutely necessary, only go with experienced local guides and up-to-date security information. Have a clear exit plan and comprehensive insurance that covers the region. Do not travel independently.

Health and tap water

Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.

Limited medical facilities outside major cities. Poor sanitation in many areas. Gaza is in a severe humanitarian crisis with very little functional medical support. Tap water is not safe in most places.

Entry and exit

Complicated and difficult. Requires Israeli approval for most entries. Very restricted for many nationalities. Movement between areas is heavily controlled.

Laws

Israeli military law applies in many areas. Hamas rules in Gaza. Law enforcement is arbitrary. Foreigners have been detained or used in political situations (ex. hostage taking on Oct. 7 2022).

Other notes

The West Bank, Gaza, and areas with Israeli settlements have very different realities. Most Israeli settlements can be relatively stable but remain political flashpoints. The West Bank is controlled by the Palestinian Authority in some zones but still experiences raids and tensions. Gaza is effectively a no-go zone for normal tourism. The situation is complex and highly sensitive.

Emergency numbers: Police 100, Ambulance 101, Fire 102.
