Is Pakistan Safe to Travel to in 2026?
Risk level: High risk
Last updated
Overview
Large and culturally rich country with stunning mountain landscapes (especially in the north) but significant security risks in many areas due to terrorism, sectarian violence, and instability.
Best time to visit
Varies: many lowland areas prefer October to March; northern mountains are best May to September.
Safety
High risk in large parts of the country. Terrorism, sectarian attacks, and kidnapping are serious concerns. Even in safer areas, petty crime and scams are common. The security situation can change rapidly.
Recommendations
Travel is not recommended for most people. If you must go, only visit the relatively safer northern areas (Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan) with professional security support. Avoid the northwest and border regions.
Health and tap water
Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.
Limited healthcare. High risk of malaria, dengue, and other diseases. Medical evacuation insurance is essential.
Entry and exit
Visa required. Process can be bureaucratic and slow. Many areas are restricted for foreigners.
Laws
Strict Islamic laws. Blasphemy laws are serious and can lead to mob violence. Criticism of the military or government is dangerous.
Other notes
Incredible natural beauty in the north (Karakoram Highway, Hunza Valley). Rich cultural heritage. Hospitality is famous. However, the security situation severely limits tourism in most of the country.
Emergency numbers: Police 15, Ambulance 115, Fire 16.
