Is Oman Safe to Travel to in 2026?

Risk level: Moderate risk

Last updated

Current alert: Minor involvement in regional tensions due to proximity to conflicts. Limited impact on most tourist areas, but some elevated security near borders with Yemen.

Overview

One of the safest, most stable, and most visitor-friendly countries in the Middle East. Oman offers a strong mix of dramatic deserts, mountains, and beautiful coastline with excellent infrastructure in the main tourist areas. The country maintains a conservative Islamic identity while being noticeably more relaxed and welcoming than many of its neighbors. Tourism is well developed in Muscat, the desert regions, and along the coast.

Best time to visit

October to March when coastal and desert heat eases; summers are extremely hot in many areas.

Safety

Very low crime. Extremely safe for tourists in all main areas. The main risks are road accidents and heat-related issues in the interior during summer. Political stability is high compared to much of the region. Overall, Oman is one of the safest and most predictable countries in the Middle East for travelers.

Recommendations

Dress modestly in public places, especially outside beach resorts and hotels. Respect local customs, particularly during Ramadan. Use reputable guides or tour operators for desert and mountain trips. Alcohol is available in hotels and licensed restaurants but public drinking is not allowed. Road safety is generally good on main routes, but driving in the interior requires caution due to heat and remote conditions.

Health and tap water

Tap water: OK in major urban areas; caution elsewhere.

Good private healthcare in Muscat. Tap water is generally safe in cities, though many hotels provide bottled water as standard. Extreme heat is the biggest health concern, especially in summer. Pharmacies are widely available in urban areas. Emergency services are reliable in main tourist zones.

Entry and exit

Visa on arrival available for many nationalities. The process is easy and straightforward. Oman has good international flight connections through Muscat.

Laws

Strict on drugs, alcohol, and public behavior. Criticism of the Sultan or government is not tolerated. Conservative Islamic laws apply, especially in more traditional areas. Laws are generally applied consistently.

Other notes

Oman offers stunning deserts, dramatic mountains, and a beautiful coastline. The people are very hospitable. The country feels more relaxed and less commercialized than the UAE while still having good infrastructure. Food is excellent with strong Arabic and Indian influences. Summers are extremely hot, while winters are pleasant.
