Is Norway Safe to Travel to in 2026?

Risk level: Low risk

Last updated

Overview

Extremely safe, wealthy, and well-organized country with world-class nature, fjords, and high quality of life. One of the safest and most scenic countries in the world.

Best time to visit

June to August for fjords and hiking; winter for northern lights and skiing in the north and mountains.

Safety

Extremely low crime. Violent crime is very rare. Petty theft can happen in Oslo and other tourist spots, but overall risk is low. Nature-related risks (weather, avalanches, hiking accidents) are more common than crime in rural areas.

Recommendations

Norway is very safe, but normal precautions apply in Oslo (petty theft can occur). Be prepared for high prices. In rural and mountain areas, respect the weather and nature - conditions can change quickly.

Health and tap water

Tap water: Excellent — generally safe to drink from the tap.

Excellent healthcare. Tap water is safe and high quality. Pharmacies are well-stocked. Be prepared for high medical costs if uninsured.

Entry and exit

Visa-free for most up to 90 days in Schengen. ETIAS expected later in 2026.

Laws

Strict on drugs and alcohol (very high taxes). Generally relaxed and well-functioning society with low corruption.

Other notes

Incredible natural beauty with fjords, mountains, and the midnight sun/northern lights. Extremely high cost of living. Excellent public infrastructure and English is widely spoken. Clean, modern, and orderly. Food is high quality but expensive.

Emergency numbers: Police 112, Ambulance 113, Fire 110.
