Is North Korea Safe to Travel to in 2026?
Risk level: High risk
Last updated
Overview
One of the most isolated, repressive, and dangerous countries in the world. Not a normal tourist destination. As long as you follow the rules, you will likely be fine, but the consequences of stepping out of line are extreme.
Best time to visit
April to June and September to October are typically used for the limited tourism that exists; winters are very cold.
Safety
Totalitarian police state. Foreigners are under constant surveillance. Arbitrary detention, propaganda, and show trials are used against those who step out of line. The risk of being used as a political pawn is high (ex. Otto Warmbier).
Recommendations
Do not travel. Independent travel is impossible. All visits are tightly controlled group tours (via fixers like Koryo tours, if available). Even then, risk of detention is real.
Health and tap water
Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.
Extremely poor healthcare system. Shortages of medicine and basic supplies. High risk of infectious diseases.
Entry and exit
Only possible via tightly controlled official tours. Independent travel is not allowed.
Laws
Everything is illegal unless explicitly permitted. Speaking against the regime, taking unauthorized photos, or using certain words can lead to severe punishment.
Other notes
The country is a giant open-air prison for its citizens. Tourists see only carefully staged versions of reality. Even 'approved' travel is risky. Consular support is practically non-existent for most nations. Is on the American sanctions list, travel may cause issues entering the USA.
Emergency numbers: Police 112, Ambulance 119, Fire 119.
