Risk level: Low-Moderate risk

Last updated

Overview

Highly developed country with stunning natural landscapes, excellent infrastructure, and very high quality of life. One of the safest and most pleasant countries in the world for travelers. The Māori can be hostile to outsiders.

Best time to visit

October to April for most outdoor travel; ski season is roughly June to September on the South Island.

Safety

Very low violent crime. Petty theft and scams occur in tourist areas but are not widespread. The main risks are environmental (weather, earthquakes, hiking accidents, and road conditions in remote areas). Overall, one of the safest countries globally.

Recommendations

Be prepared for rapidly changing weather, especially in mountainous areas. Drive carefully on rural roads. Petty theft can occur in tourist spots, but violent crime is very low. Respect Māori cultural sites and protocols.

Health and tap water

Tap water: Excellent — generally safe to drink from the tap.

Excellent healthcare. Tap water is safe to drink in most places. Some risk of insect bites and weather-related issues.

Entry and exit

Visa required for most nationalities (NZeTA for visa-exempt travelers). Generally straightforward process.

Laws

Strict gun control. Drug laws are relatively progressive in some areas. Police are professional and trustworthy.

Other notes

World-class natural beauty and outdoor activities. Excellent food and coffee culture. Very clean and well-organized. The country is quite car-dependent outside major cities, and distances can be long. Friendly and helpful culture. Earthquakes are a real risk in some regions. Tourism infrastructure is excellent.
