Risk level: Low-Moderate risk

Last updated

Overview

Highly developed and generally very safe country known for its progressive values, excellent infrastructure, and iconic canals and cycling culture. One of the most livable countries in Europe, though major tourist areas can feel crowded and have petty crime issues.

Best time to visit

May to September; cities are workable year-round with frequent rain.

Safety

Very low violent crime. Petty theft and pickpocketing are common in Amsterdam and other tourist-heavy areas. Bike theft is extremely widespread. Occasional football hooliganism or protests occur but rarely impact tourists. Rural areas and smaller towns feel very safe.

Recommendations

Be vigilant against pickpocketing in Amsterdam, especially around the Red Light District, Central Station, and busy tourist spots. Bike theft is very common - always lock your bike properly. Smaller cities and the countryside are significantly calmer and safer.

Health and tap water

Tap water: Excellent — generally safe to drink from the tap.

Excellent healthcare. Tap water is safe to drink. Cannabis is tolerated in licensed coffee shops but remains technically illegal.

Entry and exit

Visa-free for most up to 90 days in Schengen. ETIAS expected later in 2026.

Laws

Strict on hard drugs. Generally tolerant society with strict rules on public behavior in some areas.

Other notes

World-class cycling infrastructure and very bike-friendly culture. Efficient public transport. Major cities are vibrant but can feel tourist-saturated. Excellent food scene, especially cheese, stroopwafels, and international options. High English proficiency.

Emergency numbers: Police 112, Ambulance 112, Fire 112.
