Overview
Small, landlocked Eastern European country with a mix of Romanian and Soviet influences. Relatively calm but underdeveloped with some issues around crime and corruption.
Best time to visit
May to September.
Safety
Moderate risk. Petty crime and scams occur in the capital. Violent crime is relatively low compared to many post-Soviet countries, but corruption and organized crime influence exist. Road safety can be poor.
Recommendations
Be cautious of petty theft and scams in Chișinău. Use reputable taxis or ride-hailing apps. The countryside is generally calmer but has limited infrastructure.
Health and tap water
Tap water: OK in major urban areas; caution elsewhere.
Basic healthcare. Tap water is generally not safe to drink. Some mosquito-borne disease risk in rural areas.
Entry and exit
Visa-free for most nationalities up to 90 days.
Laws
Generally relaxed toward tourists. Strict on drugs. Corruption is widespread.
Other notes
Interesting culture and wine regions (especially around Cricova and Purcari). Can feel quite poor and underdeveloped. Tourism infrastructure is limited outside Chișinău and a few wine estates. Friendly people but service can be basic.
Emergency numbers: Police 112, Ambulance 112, Fire 112.
Regional risk notes for Moldova
- Chisinau & central Moldova — Low-Moderate risk: Capital is the main hub. Low risk for visitors.
- Transnistria — Elevated risk: De facto Russian-controlled. Different currency, police, and rules. Can be visited but feels like a different country. Very fascinating. Avoid if tensions rise.
- Wine regions & countryside — Low-Moderate risk: Popular and generally safe.
