Overview
Large, sparsely populated West African country with a mix of Arab-Berber and sub-Saharan African cultures. Tourism is very limited and the country faces challenges with security, slavery, and underdevelopment.
Best time to visit
November to February is cooler; the rest of the year is very hot in much of the country.
Safety
Moderate to high risk. Violent crime, kidnapping, and terrorism threats exist, especially near the Mali border. Petty crime is common in the capital. Some areas are affected by armed groups operating in the Sahel region.
Recommendations
Travel only with experienced local guides. Avoid the border areas with Mali and the northern desert regions. Be extremely cautious in Nouakchott. Slavery and human trafficking remain serious issues despite being officially abolished.
Health and tap water
Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.
Very limited healthcare. High risk of malaria and other tropical diseases. Tap water is not safe to drink. Medical facilities are basic even in the capital.
Entry and exit
Visa required. Can be obtained on arrival in some cases, but the process can be slow.
Laws
Strict Islamic laws. Slavery and human trafficking remain problems despite legal bans. LGBTQ individuals face severe legal and social risks. Criticism of the government can lead to issues.
Other notes
Vast desert landscapes and unique cultural mix. Tourism infrastructure is very limited. The country can feel very isolated and difficult to travel in. Hospitality can be strong in traditional communities, but overall conditions are harsh for visitors.
