Last updated
Overview
Historically rich West African country with incredible cultural heritage (especially Timbuktu and Dogon Country). However, ongoing insecurity, terrorism, and instability make it extremely dangerous for travelling.
Best time to visit
Cooler dry season roughly November to February is generally preferred; summers are extremely hot.
Safety
Extremely high risk. Terrorism, kidnapping, and armed groups are active in large parts of the country. Even the capital Bamako has seen attacks. Crime rates are high in many areas.
Recommendations
Do not travel to Mali. The risk of kidnapping, terrorism, and armed conflict is very high in most of the country. Only essential travel should be considered, and even then with extreme caution and professional security support.
Health and tap water
Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.
Limited healthcare infrastructure outside major cities. High risk of malaria, foodborne illness, and other tropical diseases. Medical evacuation insurance is essential.
Entry and exit
Visa required. Travel is heavily restricted and not recommended.
Laws
Unstable security situation means laws can be inconsistently enforced. High risk of arbitrary detention or being caught in conflict.
Other notes
