Last updated
Overview
Popular luxury tourism destination known for overwater bungalows and clear lagoons. Safety is generally good inside resorts, but the country is socially conservative and has notable restrictions, especially for women and LGBTQ travelers.
Best time to visit
Dry season roughly December to April is peak; May to November is wetter with possible storms.
Safety
Low violent crime against tourists inside resorts. Petty theft and scams occur on local islands and in Male. The main risks outside resorts are cultural and legal rather than criminal. Women may face harassment on local islands. LGBTQ individuals should be extremely cautious due to strict laws.
Recommendations
Stay within resort areas unless you are comfortable with local Islamic customs. Dress modestly when visiting local islands. Be cautious of petty theft and scams in Male and on local islands. Alcohol is only available in resorts.
Health and tap water
Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.
Good private healthcare in resorts. Tap water is not safe to drink. Some mosquito-borne disease risk. Medical evacuation from remote resorts can be slow.
Entry and exit
Visa-free for most nationalities up to 30 days.
Laws
Strict Islamic laws apply outside resorts. Alcohol, pork, and public displays of affection are restricted or banned on local islands. Homosexuality is illegal. Criticism of Islam or the government can lead to serious consequences.
Other notes
World-class beaches and diving. Tourism is heavily resort-based with a clear separation between tourist zones and local islands. Can feel very commercial in resorts. The country is vulnerable to climate change and rising sea levels. Good for luxury and relaxation, but less suitable for independent or culturally immersive travel.
