Oil-rich North African country in chaos since 2011. Civil war, militias, and instability make it highly dangerous. Only for extreme risk-takers or those with serious connections.
Best time to visit
Spring and autumn are more moderate; summers are very hot.
Safety
High risk of kidnapping, militia violence, terrorism, and arbitrary detention. Crime, smuggling, and lawlessness widespread. Airports and borders are chaotic.
Recommendations
Do not travel unless absolutely necessary and with heavy security. Stick to secure compounds if you must go. Have evacuation plan and local fixers.
Health and tap water
Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.
Poor healthcare outside Tripoli. Tap water unsafe. High risk of infectious diseases.
Entry and exit
Visa required. Very difficult and bureaucratic. Land borders risky.
Laws
Unclear and arbitrarily enforced. Islamic/Sharia law applies in many areas. Foreigners often targeted.
Other notes
Ancient ruins and desert landscapes are world-class but almost impossible to safely enjoy. The country is fractured between rival factions. Is on the American sanctions list, travel may cause issues entering the USA.
