Is Lebanon Safe to Travel to in 2026?

Risk level: High risk

Last updated

Overview

Collapsing state with severe economic crisis, political instability, and high risk of violence. Not recommended for tourism.

Best time to visit

April to June and September to October for much of the country; summers are hot on the coast; mountains have a winter ski season when conditions allow.

Safety

High risk of political violence, protests, armed clashes between factions, and spillover from regional conflicts. Hezbollah is heavily armed and controls large parts of the south and east. Crime has risen sharply due to economic collapse. Kidnapping and arbitrary detention are real risks.

Recommendations

Strongly advised to avoid. If you must go, only to Beirut and Mount Lebanon with local contacts and real-time security updates. Avoid borders with Syria and Israel.

Health and tap water

Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.

Collapsing healthcare system. Shortages of medicine and fuel. Poor sanitation and garbage crisis in many areas.

Entry and exit

Visa on arrival for many nationalities but situation at borders can be chaotic.

Laws

Weak and inconsistent. Hezbollah operates as a state within a state in many areas. Corruption is rampant.

Other notes

Once known as the 'Paris of the Middle East', Lebanon is now a failed state in slow motion. Beirut still has some functioning areas but the country as a whole is unstable and dangerous.

Emergency numbers: Police 112, Ambulance 140, Fire 175.
