Last updated
Overview
Large, stable, and relatively modern Central Asian country with good infrastructure in its major cities and a strong sense of order. Kazakhstan has invested heavily in development, particularly in Almaty and the capital Astana (Nur-Sultan). The country offers a mix of modern cities, vast steppes, and beautiful mountain regions. It is generally one of the safer and more organized countries in Central Asia for tourists. While some southern and border areas are more conservative and less developed, the main tourist routes are straightforward and low-risk. Kazakhstan is a convenient entry point into Central Asia with improving tourism infrastructure.
Best time to visit
May to September for most travel; winters are severe, especially in the north.
Safety
Low violent crime in Almaty and Astana. Petty theft exists but is not aggressive. Rural areas and the south are calmer but less developed. The country is generally one of the safer 'Stans'. Political protests are rare and usually do not affect tourists. Road safety is reasonable on major routes.
Recommendations
Use Yandex Go or official taxis in cities. Dress modestly in rural and southern areas. Respect local customs and religious sites. Public transport is decent in major cities. A car or organized tours are useful for exploring the countryside and mountains. English is limited outside tourist zones, so translation apps are helpful.
Health and tap water
Tap water: OK in major urban areas; caution elsewhere.
Decent healthcare in major cities. Tap water should be treated or use bottled water as a precaution. Pharmacies are widely available in urban areas. Emergency services are functional in cities.
Entry and exit
Visa-free or e-visa for many nationalities. The process is straightforward. Kazakhstan has good international connections through Almaty and Astana airports.
Laws
Strict on drugs. Criticism of the government is unwise. Avoid protests or political gatherings. Laws are generally applied consistently in tourist areas.
