Risk level: Moderate risk

Last updated

Current alert: Minor involvement in regional tensions due to proximity to conflicts. Limited impact on most tourist areas, but some elevated security near borders with Syria and Iraq.

Overview

Generally safe and stable Middle Eastern country with incredible historical sites (Petra, Wadi Rum, Dead Sea) and friendly people. One of the more reliable destinations in the region for tourists.

Best time to visit

March to May and September to November; summers are very hot at low elevations such as the Dead Sea and Aqaba.

Safety

Low violent crime against tourists. Petty theft occurs in tourist areas. The main risks are regional (border areas) rather than widespread crime. Occasional protests can occur but rarely affect tourists.

Recommendations

Normal precautions in Amman and other cities. Be respectful of local customs and dress modestly outside tourist areas. Avoid the borders with Syria and Iraq. Use reputable guides in Wadi Rum and Petra.

Health and tap water

Tap water: OK in major urban areas; caution elsewhere.

Good healthcare in major cities. Tap water is generally ok in hotels, but use bottled water regardless.

Entry and exit

Visa on arrival or e-visa available for most nationalities. Relatively straightforward.

Laws

Generally tolerant toward tourists. Strict on drugs. Criticism of the monarchy can lead to problems.

Other notes

World-class historical sites and desert landscapes. Very hospitable people. Can feel quite safe and relaxed compared to many neighbors. Good tourism infrastructure in key areas.
