Is Jamaica Safe to Travel to in 2026?
Risk level: Elevated risk
Last updated
Overview
Caribbean island known for its beaches, music, and vibrant culture. Tourism is a major industry, but violent crime remains a serious issue in many areas outside tourist resorts.
Best time to visit
December to April is drier and peak season; June to November is hurricane season.
Safety
Moderate to high risk. Violent crime rates are high in many parts of the country, especially in and around Kingston and some areas of Montego Bay. Tourists are generally safer inside resorts, but robberies and scams targeting visitors still occur. Some areas have gang-related violence.
Recommendations
Stay within resort areas or well-known tourist zones (Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios). Do not leave resort compounds alone at night. Use reputable transportation and tour operators. Avoid Kingston and certain urban areas entirely unless necessary.
Health and tap water
Tap water: OK in major urban areas; caution elsewhere.
Basic to good private healthcare in tourist areas. Tap water is generally not safe to drink. High risk of mosquito-borne illnesses. Medical facilities outside tourist zones can be limited.
Entry and exit
Visa-free for most nationalities up to 90 days.
Laws
Generally relaxed toward tourists inside resorts. Strict on drugs. Police presence is limited in some areas.
Other notes
Excellent beaches, reggae culture, and food. Tourism is heavily resort-based. Outside resorts, the country can feel rough and underdeveloped. Strong cultural identity but significant inequality and crime issues in many communities. Good value for all-inclusive resorts, which are the only ones really safe enough to be worth it, but independent travel carries higher risks than in many other Caribbean destinations.
Emergency numbers: Police 119, Ambulance 110, Fire 110.
