Overview

Ancient land with incredible history but destroyed by decades of war, ISIS, and instability. Extremely dangerous for independent travel.

Best time to visit

Spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November); summers are extremely hot.

Safety

High risk of terrorism, kidnapping, militia violence, and arbitrary detention. Large parts are still unstable. Infrastructure is poor.

Recommendations

Do not travel unless with heavy security and local fixers. Only visit secure areas like Erbil in Kurdistan if necessary.

Health and tap water

Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.

Collapsed healthcare in many areas. Tap water unsafe. High risk of infectious diseases.

Entry and exit

Visa required. Very difficult and risky.

Laws

Unclear and arbitrarily enforced. Strict Islamic rules in some areas.

Other notes

Mesopotamia's ruins are world-class but almost impossible to safely visit. The country is fractured and recovering slowly.
