Highly developed international city with excellent infrastructure, safety, and connectivity. Generally very safe for tourists, though political tensions can occasionally flare up.

Best time to visit

October to December is often clearest and most pleasant; summer is hot, humid, and typhoon-prone.

Safety

Low violent crime. Petty theft and scams occur in tourist zones. Political protests can occasionally lead to disruptions or clashes with police, though large-scale unrest has decreased since 2019. Overall, one of the safer major cities in Asia.

Recommendations

Be aware of your surroundings during any large public gatherings or protests. Petty theft can occur in crowded tourist areas (especially on public transport). Otherwise, normal big-city precautions apply.

Tap water: Excellent — generally safe to drink from the tap.

Excellent healthcare. Tap water is safe to drink.

Visa-free for most nationalities (usually 14-90 days depending on nationality).

Laws

Strict on drugs. National security laws have reduced political freedoms. Criticism of the Chinese government can lead to legal consequences.

World-class public transport, food, and shopping. Very clean and efficient. Can feel crowded and fast-paced. Political atmosphere has become more restricted since 2019. Excellent base for exploring the region.
