Risk level: Moderate risk

Last updated

Overview

Central American country with beautiful Caribbean islands and Mayan ruins, but with high crime rates in many areas.

Best time to visit

Dry season roughly November to April on much of the mainland; Bay Islands are popular year-round with a wetter stretch mid-year.

Safety

High crime in urban areas (robbery, extortion). Tourist areas like the Bay Islands are significantly safer but still require caution. Some rural regions remain risky.

Recommendations

Stick to established tourist zones (Roatán, Utila, Copán). Use reputable transportation. Avoid walking alone at night in cities. Be extremely cautious in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula.

Health and tap water

Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.

Basic healthcare in tourist areas. Malaria risk in some regions. Tap water is not safe to drink.

Entry and exit

Visa-free for most up to 90 days.

Laws

Generally relaxed toward tourists. Strict on drugs. Corruption is widespread.

Other notes

Excellent diving on the Bay Islands and impressive ruins at Copán. Can feel rough and underdeveloped outside tourist areas. Good value but requires more vigilance than Costa Rica or Panama.
