Overview
Beautiful Mediterranean country with ancient history, islands, and food. Generally safe for tourists but economic issues and some urban disorder persist.
Best time to visit
April to June and September to October for islands and mainland; July and August are hottest and most crowded.
Safety
Low violent crime against tourists. Petty theft and pickpocketing common in Athens. Islands and rural areas are very safe.
Recommendations
Stick to Athens tourist areas, islands, and main sites. Use common sense at night in cities. Avoid protests.
Health and tap water
Tap water: Excellent — generally safe to drink from the tap.
Decent healthcare in major cities. Tap water is safe in most places but bottled is safer on islands.
