Tiny British Overseas Territory at the southern tip of Spain. Extremely safe, well-organized, and easy to visit as a day trip or short stopover.

Best time to visit

April to June and September to October; summers are hot and busy.

Safety

Extremely low crime. One of the safest places in Europe. Violent crime is virtually nonexistent. Petty theft is rare.

Recommendations

Very safe territory. Normal precautions are more than enough. The Rock and main town are easily walkable. Be aware that it can get very crowded with cruise ship passengers on some days.

Health and tap water

Tap water: OK in major urban areas; caution elsewhere.

Good healthcare. Tap water is safe to drink.

Entry and exit

Visa-free for most nationalities (as it follows UK entry rules). Easy access from Spain, but border controls may take a long time.

Laws

Follows British law. Strict on drugs. Very low corruption.

Other notes

Famous for the Rock of Gibraltar, Barbary macaques, and British atmosphere. Duty-free shopping is popular. Can feel very touristy when cruise ships are in port. Excellent views and easy to explore in a day or two.
