Last updated
Overview
One of the more stable and tourist-friendly countries in West Africa. Known for its history, culture, beaches, and relatively good infrastructure compared to many neighbors.
Best time to visit
Dry seasons roughly November to March and a shorter break around July to August in some areas; humidity is high year-round.
Safety
Moderate risk. Petty theft, scams, and overcharging are common. Violent crime exists but is generally lower than in many other West African countries. Some areas have higher risks, particularly at night or in poorer neighborhoods.
Recommendations
Be cautious of scams and aggressive touts, especially in Accra and at tourist sites. Use reputable guides and transportation. Stick to well-known areas and avoid walking alone at night in cities.
Health and tap water
Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.
Basic healthcare in major cities. High malaria risk - take precautions. Tap water is not safe to drink. Food hygiene can be bad.
Entry and exit
Visa required for most nationalities. Can be obtained on arrival or in advance.
Laws
Generally relaxed toward tourists. Strict on drugs. Homosexuality is illegal but enforcement against foreigners is rare.
Other notes
Rich history (including slave forts), vibrant culture, and beautiful beaches. Can feel chaotic and underdeveloped outside tourist areas. Good value for money but requires more caution and patience than more developed destinations.
