Risk level: Moderate risk
Last updated
Overview
Major European country with world-class culture, food, history, and landscapes. Safety is generally good in most areas, but significant variation exists between regions and cities. Tourist hotspots, especially Paris, have high levels of petty crime and some visible urban disorder. They also often have armed policemen stationed on major streets, which can be jarring.
Best time to visit
April to June and September to October for cities; Mediterranean coast is busiest July and August; Alps ski season is roughly December to March.
Safety
Moderate risk in tourist areas. Petty theft, pickpocketing, and scams are very common in Paris and other popular destinations. Violent crime is generally low but exists in certain urban neighborhoods. No-go zones exist, do not enter them. Some cities have visible homelessness, drug use, and social tension. Occasional riots and large-scale protests can occur. Road safety is good on major routes but can be poor in rural areas.
Recommendations
Be extremely vigilant against pickpocketing and scams in Paris and other major tourist cities. Avoid leaving belongings unattended. Use common sense in crowded areas and on public transport. Be aware of occasional protests and strikes that can disrupt travel. Research neighborhoods carefully in larger cities.
Health and tap water
Tap water: Excellent — generally safe to drink from the tap.
Excellent healthcare. Tap water is safe to drink. Pharmacies are widespread and well-stocked. Some mosquito-borne disease risk in southern regions during summer.
Entry and exit
Visa-free for most nationalities up to 90 days in Schengen. ETIAS expected later in 2026.
Laws
Strict on drugs. Generally well-organized with low corruption in most areas. Police can be strict about minor offenses. Some areas have issues with inconsistent enforcement.
Other notes
Incredible food, wine, art, and history. Tourism infrastructure is excellent in popular areas. Can feel very crowded and tourist-saturated in peak season (especially Paris, Provence, and the French Riviera). Visible inequality and urban decay in parts of major cities. Strong regional identities and cultures. The country has experienced periodic social unrest and protests in recent years.
Emergency numbers: Police 112, Ambulance 112, Fire 112.
