Last updated

Overview

Small Central American country that has seen major improvements in security in recent years. Known for its Pacific beaches, volcanoes, and growing tourism sector.

Best time to visit

Dry season roughly November to April is most comfortable.

Safety

Violent crime has dropped dramatically compared to previous years. Petty theft and scams still occur in some areas. Road safety can be poor. Some rural areas remain riskier than tourist zones.

Recommendations

The security situation has improved significantly, but normal precautions are still advised. Stick to tourist areas and use reputable transportation. Avoid isolated areas at night.

Health and tap water

Tap water: OK in major urban areas; caution elsewhere.

Basic to good healthcare in tourist areas. Malaria risk is low. Tap water is generally not safe to drink.

Entry and exit

Visa-free for most nationalities up to 90 days.

Laws

Generally relaxed toward tourists. Strict on drugs. The government has taken a very hard line on crime.

Other notes

Beautiful beaches, surfing, and volcanic landscapes. More affordable than Costa Rica or Panama. Tourism infrastructure is developing quickly since the country transitioned to a more stable political environment. May become blue in the near future, if this progress lasts. Can feel rough around the edges outside tourist areas.
