Is Egypt Safe to Travel to in 2026?
Risk level: Moderate risk
Last updated
Overview
Historically rich country with world-famous ancient sites, the Nile, and Red Sea resorts. Tourism is well developed in key areas, but safety varies significantly by region due to crime, terrorism risks, and political instability.
Best time to visit
October to April for most sightseeing; summers are extremely hot, especially Upper Egypt.
Safety
Moderate risk. Petty crime, scams, and sexual harassment are common in tourist areas. Terrorism remains a threat in some regions (especially Sinai). Violent crime against tourists is relatively low in main tourist zones but can occur. Road safety is poor.
Recommendations
Stick to well-established tourist areas. Use reputable tour operators and transportation. Avoid the Sinai Peninsula (especially North Sinai) and border areas with Libya and Sudan. Be cautious of scams and sexual harassment, particularly toward women.
Health and tap water
Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.
Basic to good private healthcare in tourist areas. Tap water is not safe to drink. High risk of stomach issues. Some malaria risk in certain rural areas.
Entry and exit
Visa required for most nationalities (can be obtained on arrival or e-visa).
Laws
Strict on drugs. Criticism of the government or military can lead to serious consequences. LGBTQ individuals face legal and social risks.
Other notes
Incredible historical sites (Pyramids, Luxor, Abu Simbel). Red Sea diving is world-class. Can feel very touristy and commercialized in popular areas. Sexual harassment of women is a widespread issue. The country has good tourism infrastructure in key spots but can feel chaotic and bureaucratic elsewhere.
Emergency numbers: Police 122, Ambulance 123, Fire 180.
