Is Ecuador Safe to Travel to in 2026?

Risk level: Moderate risk

Last updated

Overview

Diverse South American country with the Galápagos Islands, Andes, and Amazon. Security has deteriorated significantly in recent years, especially on the mainland.

Best time to visit

Varies by region: Andes highlands are often best June to September; the coast and Galapagos have their own dry and wet patterns.

Safety

Moderate to high risk on the mainland. Violent crime, armed robbery, and kidnapping have increased, particularly in Guayaquil and some coastal areas. The Galápagos remain safe. Road safety is poor in many regions.

Recommendations

The Galápagos Islands are generally safe. On the mainland, stick to well-known tourist areas and avoid Guayaquil and parts of the coast. Use reputable operators and avoid walking alone at night in cities.

Health and tap water

Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.

Basic healthcare in major cities. Malaria risk exists in the Amazon and some coastal areas. Tap water is not safe to drink.

Entry and exit

Visa-free for most nationalities up to 90 days.

Laws

Generally relaxed toward tourists. Strict on drugs. Corruption is present.

Other notes

The Galápagos are world-class. The mainland has incredible diversity (Andes, Amazon, coast) but feels increasingly unstable and rough outside tourist bubbles. Tourism infrastructure is decent in popular areas but basic elsewhere.

Emergency numbers: Police 101, Ambulance 102, Fire 102.
