Safety

Low violent crime against tourists in resort areas. Petty theft, scams, and occasional armed robbery occur in cities and poorer neighborhoods. Road safety is poor. Some areas near the Haitian border have higher risks.

Recommendations

Stick to reputable resorts and tourist areas. Be cautious in Santo Domingo and other cities. Use hotel transportation or trusted taxis. Avoid walking alone at night in urban areas. Be wary of scams and overcharging.

Health and tap water

Tap water: Not recommended — use bottled or filtered water.

Good private healthcare in tourist areas. Malaria risk is low but exists in some rural zones. Tap water is not safe to drink. Dengue and other mosquito-borne illnesses are present.

Entry and exit

Visa-free for most nationalities up to 30 days (tourist card required, usually included in airfare).
