Is Czechia Safe to Travel to in 2026?

Risk level: Low risk

Last updated

Overview

Highly safe, stable, and developed Central European country with excellent infrastructure, low violent crime, and a rich cultural heritage. Czechia offers some of the most beautiful historic cities in Europe, world-class beer, and a very high quality of life in most areas. Prague is the main tourist draw and has become one of the most visited cities on the continent, but the rest of the country is less crowded while being equally charming so it should not be slept on. The country has a strong sense of national identity and has modernized quickly since the fall of communism. It feels orderly, clean, and well-managed compared to many neighbors.

Best time to visit

May to September for pleasant city weather; Christmas markets make December popular despite cold.

Safety

Czechia is very safe for tourists. Violent crime against visitors is extremely rare. Petty theft and pickpocketing are the main issues, particularly in crowded tourist areas of Prague. These crimes are usually opportunistic rather than violent. The country has low corruption and good police presence in tourist zones. Rural areas and smaller towns are exceptionally safe and calm. Road safety is high on major routes. Overall, Czechia is one of the safer and more orderly countries in Europe.

Recommendations

Focus on Prague for its historic center and architecture, but do not stay too long if you want a more authentic experience - smaller cities and the countryside are equally rewarding. Brno, Český Krumlov, Karlovy Vary, and the Bohemian Paradise are all worth visiting. Use public transport or walking in cities. Normal precautions are sufficient in most places. English is widely spoken in tourist areas and among younger people. A car is useful for exploring rural areas and smaller towns.

Health and tap water

Tap water: Excellent — generally safe to drink from the tap.

Excellent healthcare system with high standards. Tap water is safe and high quality in most areas. Pharmacies are well-stocked and easy to access. Emergency services are professional and responsive. Private health insurance can provide faster access to specialists if needed.

Entry and exit

Visa-free for most nationalities for up to 90 days in the Schengen Area. ETIAS authorization will be required for many travelers later in 2026. Prague Airport is modern and efficient with good connections across Europe.

Laws

Strict on drugs. Low corruption. Laws are applied consistently and fairly. Public behavior is relatively relaxed but respectful. There is a culture around drinking, so people may be rowdier at night.

Other notes

Czechia offers outstanding beer, food, historic architecture, and beautiful countryside. Prague is stunning but can feel very touristy and crowded in peak season. Smaller cities like Brno and Český Krumlov are more relaxed and authentic. Public transport is efficient and affordable. The country feels orderly and well-managed with minimal social problems. Winters can be cold, while summers are pleasant. English is widely spoken in tourist areas. The society feels fair, orderly, and well-functioning.
